Flash fiction is a very simple format that allows time-poor writers to practice their art and try out new genres. We encourage any writers to practice writing flash fiction.
The definition of flash fiction is:
fiction of a type characterized by being very short, typically consisting of only a few hundred words.
Our word counts for flash fiction is usually: 1,500 for publication, 600 for writing practice.
One can reasonably write up to 700 words in 30mn. Believe me, we have timed ourselves!
It is much harder to be concise, straight to the point and brief than anything else.
We do use the flash fiction format during our creative writing meetings and it is a good way to start a novel as well. Who knows? The flash fiction one writes could turn out to become the synopsis for a full length novel.
